چکیده

The Industrial Revolution has led to a substantial i ncrease in the generation and release of greenhouse gases (GHG) into environment. These GHGs like CO2 if present in abundance in the atmosphere cause damage to the natural ecosystems through global warming. One of the possible approaches to mitigate the global warming phenomena is by safely and long-term underground disposal of CO2 in suitable geological formations. The sealing capacity of the caprock should be capable to prevent the stored CO2 from escaping or causing other undesirable circumstances for a successful geosequestration project. This paper examines the change in the permeability and strength behaviour of the sedimentary rocks with under different stress conditions during and after the injection of CO2 with regard to the factors that can potentially hamper the caprock’s integrity and lead to possible of escaping of CO2 from the reservoir. In addition, the consequences of any sort of leakage, the mechanisms of failure of the cap-rock and migration of the CO2 through the fractured rock mass are als o discussed. The geo-mechanical effects of CO2 storage on cap rock properties and behaviour are analysed further with emphasis on crack initiation and propagation along with the factors responsible for it.

Coupled Hydromechanical Modeling of Co2 Sequestration in Deep Saline Aquifers

Sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in deep saline aquifers has emerged as an option for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. The large amounts of supercritical CO2 that need to be injected into deep saline aquifers may cause large fluid pressure increases. The resulting overpressure may promote reactivation of sealed fractures or the creation of new ones in the caprock seal. ...

Enhanced Gas Recovery with Carbon Dioxide Sequestration in a Water-drive Gas Condensate Reservoir: a Case Study in a Real Gas Field

Gas reservoirs usually have high recovery due to high mobility and low residual gas saturation, although some of them producing under water-drive mechanism have low recovery efficiency. Encroachment of water into these reservoirs traps considerable amount of gas and increases the maximum residual gas saturation, which results in the reduction of gas and condensate production. Generally, the rec...

Numerical modeling of self - limiting and self - enhancing caprock alteration induced by CO 2 storage in a depleted gas reservoir

This paper presents numerical simulations of reactive transport which may be induced in the caprock of an on-shore depleted gas reservoir by the geological sequestration of carbon dioxide. The objective is to verify that CO2 geological disposal activities currently being planned for the study area are safe and do not induce any undesired environmental impact. In our model, fluid flow and minera...

بررسی اثرات و پتانسیل عملیات مکانیکی آبخیزداری درترسیب کربن، حوزه آبخیز گاودره کردستان

The global warming due to increased greenhouse gas concentrations, especially carbon dioxide has led to severe climate change over the past decade. This has aggravated the destruction of natural resources, soil and water, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. One of the most important tools for adaptation or correction of the consequences of this crisis is the carbon sequestration using nat...

Estimation of Soil Carbon Sequestration Rate in Steppes (Case Study: Saveh Rudshur Steppes)

Since Renaissance, the natural ecosystems have fallen into a complete state ofdisarray due to the rise in the amount of carbon dioxide. Soil, the unsparing stuff, is one of themajor sources of carbon storage, and plays a paramount role in the global equilibrium ofcarbon as well as carbon sequestration. Given that Iran is benefiting from vast steppes, therate of carbon sequestration in them dese...
